Network management messages for IoT environments

Based on the characteristics of the Internet of Things, this paper analyzes the difficulty of the current SNMP protocol in meeting the development status of the Internet of Things network management. Combining the advantages of the NETCONF protocol in the Internet of Things network management, it is proposed to use NETCONF for the Internet of Things network management. Combining the characteristics of the Internet of Things, a management based on NETCONF is established. On the client side and the agent side, a network management message conversion mechanism is proposed and implemented. The message conversion mechanism has adaptive capabilities and can adaptively convert XML-based management messages into the message format required by the current agent. The message converter is mainly aimed at the current The SNMP protocol, a network management standard widely used in network environments, has achieved compatibility with SNMP, and the conversion method with ANMP and other network management protocols has been explored. Finally, experiments have proven the feasibility and effectiveness of this message conversion mechanism. Provide theoretical basis and reference for a network management platform that integrates heterogeneous protocols in the Internet of Things environment.

Abstract:With the features of the Internet of Things (IoT’) ,the current SNMP protocol can hardly keep up with the development ofnetwork management of loT ,which the NETCONF protocol can qualify. In these circumstances , we propose the NETCONF protocolcould be applied to network management of loT according to its strengths in it, and develop the manage-side and agent-side based on NETCONF.More importantly, we achieve an adaptive message transformation mechanism, which can automatically convert XML-based messages to the messages needed by particular agent . Focused on the widely used SNMP at present, we achieve the compatibility of it ,and explore the feasibility of ANMP and some other protocols in network management. Finally ,the experiments confirm the fea-sibility and availability of this message transformation mechanism , providing a theory basis and reference for network management platform based on heterogeneous networks and protocols in the future.

The Internet of Things has many new features based on the current Internet, so it has put forward new demands for Internet of Things network management. The five system management functions of network management defined by ISO are difficult to meet new demands in the Internet of Things era. Traditional based on The network management system of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP, Simple Network Management Protocol) has increasingly prominent limitations in terms of scalability and management efficiency, so a new network management system model is urgently needed.

The emergence of eXtensible Markup Language1] (XML, eXtensible Markup Language) provides the possibility to build network management models in the Internet of Things environment. XML-based network management systems have characteristics that other network management systems cannot match, and these characteristics make it very Suitable for IoT network management. IoT-Gateway

Based on the above advantages, in order to unify and standardize XML-based network management, IETF proposed NETCONFl 3 based on XML technology in 2006]

The proposal of (RFC4741) protocol .NETCONF not only strengthens the functions of the new generation network management configuration based on XML and forms a clear-structured specification, but also significantly improves the efficiency of XML network management. Network management based on NETCONF has been widely recognized , In fact, some IT companies have also developed and implemented related systems that support NETCONF, such as Juniper’s JU-NO4 product, Cisco’s IOS 5 product, and related open source products include en-suite6’s yencap manager and yuma[7, etc. The Internet of Things, a network system that integrates into various heterogeneous networks, has an even more urgent need for a network management system based on NETCONF to achieve efficient management of network devices across networks and systems.

Compared with the traditional Internet, the Internet of Things has some significant characteristics of its own, such as network topology changes rapidly; network nodes can move at high speed; link status between nodes changes frequently; node energy, computing power, storage capacity are limited, etc. NETCONF replaces The de facto industry standard SNMP protocol will be a long process. It is necessary to use a conversion mechanism to achieve both management and SNMP management.

network devices, and can effectively manage devices based on other network protocols. To apply NETCONF to IoT network management, you must first achieve compatibility with SNMP and convert NETCONF-based management messages into SNMP management messages. Currently ,Protocol conversion research has attracted the attention of many ,network management experts, but most of them remain in the ,theoretical stage, or the systems developed have poor scalability. ,There is little research on message conversion methods in ,the complex network environment of the Internet of Things. ,This paper designed The message conversion mechanism can support the currently widely used SNMP protocol and non-SNMP protocols (such as ANMP, NETCONF), and the NETCONF management end and agent end are designed based on the characteristics of the Internet of Things to facilitate the implementation of network equipment in the large environment of the Internet of Things in the future. In terms of conversion gateway, in order to make up for the shortcomings of SNMP protocol in network management scalability and efficiency, literature [8] proposed an SNMP MIB to XML conversion algorithm and applied the conversion algorithm to SNMP-XML conversion gateway. Literature [9] ] focuses on the MIB conversion technology in the SNMP-XML translation gateway, and realizes the conversion of MIB files to XML files. The literature [10] proposes a method for managing SNMP and CLI devices by a network management system based on NETCONF. The article It mainly analyzes the conversion of data models and message mapping. Literature [11] proposed a universal gateway model to achieve unified management of SNMP agents and non-SNMP agents based on XML network management.

In terms of analysis and application development of the NETCONF protocol, the literature [12] proved the powerful performance of NETCONF in complex network environments through experimental analysis. The experimental results showed that NETCONF is more efficient, safer and more secure in network management than SNMP and CLI. It is more scalable and easier to develop new applications. Literature [13] conducted a comparative analysis on NETCONF’s three modeling languages, XML Schema, RelaxNG and YANG, and concluded that although YANG is a modeling language specially designed for NETCONF, There are still some aspects that are not considered enough, such as the imperfect design of the conversion tool.

Most of the above-mentioned literatures stay at the theoretical architecture stage, or only implement a single function. For example, the converter proposed in literature [8] is not very secure, the data is easily hijacked during the transmission process, and the XML management report is used. The literature has not formed a unified specification. Literature [9-10] mainly focuses on data model conversion, and literature [11] mainly focuses on the architectural design of managing message conversion, and only provides a simple description in terms of implementation. Although NETCONF has many advantages, As the de facto industry standard for network management, SNMP has many irreplaceable features, such as its simplicity, practicality, and its ability to monitor equipment in real time better than the NETCONF protocol. These determine that the SNMP protocol will exist in the network environment for a long time in the future. , it is impractical to simply apply NETCONF to the Internet of Things. Based on the NETCONF protocol, this paper proposes a message conversion mechanism for Internet of Things network management to achieve compatibility with SNMP. It also considers support for other network management protocols and system Scalability provides a reference for the unified management of network devices in the Internet of Things environment.
